Ranger Heartley scores in California Derby
Sunday, January 17th, 2010
Despite racing greenly in the stretch, Ranger Heartley delivered a game front-running victory in the $100,000 California Derby on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields to pick up his first career stakes win.
The 3-year-old Lost Soldier gelding drifted in and out through the stretch but had plenty of stamina in reserve when challenged by 7-10 favorite Connemara and Shudacudawudya. Connemara drew alongside Ranger Heartley from the inside and Shudacudawudya rallied on the outside near the eighth pole, but the winner dug in to edge away under Julio Garcia for a 3/4-length victory.
On My Dime gets up in Fitzsimmons
Sunday, January 17th, 2010
On My Dime rallied strongly through the lane to capture Saturday's $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile Handicap at Turf Paradise, though the race was marred by a spill on the far turn.
On My Dime, owned by Honor Roll Racing and trained by Dennis Sowers, bided his time as Icemancometh ran off to set a sizzling pace in the one-mile turf race. He began his move outside on the turn and rallied doggedly to get up by a neck under Ry Eikleberry. Highland Games, second in this last year, rallied well into the lane, looked like the winner when he took the lead in midstretch but got nailed by On My Dime in the final yards.

San Fernando: Papa Clem comes through
Sunday, January 17th, 2010
The focus was on Papa Clem at Santa Anita on Saturday, and the attention made trainer Gary Stute a little uncomfortable.
The colt was the 3-2 favorite in the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes at Santa Anita, only the second time in his career he was the public choice. When Papa Clem won the Grade 2 race for 4-year-olds, just his third career win, it provided a sense of relief to Stute, who said he wasn't used to saddling the favorite.
"It's a lot more pressure," he said. "You better win."

Milestones for Amen Hallelujah, Sutherland
Sunday, January 17th, 2010
A reduction in distance and an easier field gave Amen Hallelujah her first stakes win in Saturday's $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita. The victory in the Grade 3 race also was the first in a graded stakes at Santa Anita for jockey Chantal Sutherland.
Sutherland gave Amen Hallelujah an ideal ride in the seven-furlong race. Fourth in a field of six 3-year-old fillies for the first half-mile, Amen Hallelujah ($8.40) closed steadily on the outside to win by three-quarters of a length over Franny Freud.

Northern Belle takes show to Oaklawn
Sunday, January 17th, 2010
Northern Belle makes herself at home wherever she goes, but she looks like she might have a special affinity for Oaklawn Park. She won her first stakes here Saturday, when she edged past favorite One Smokin' Lady late in the $50,000 American Beauty.
It was the first Oaklawn start for Northern Belle, who earlier in her career had placed in stakes at Philadelphia Park and Saratoga and won races at Fair Grounds, Delaware Park and Keeneland.
